This one-day workshop is aimed those who are involved in partnership working in higher education. Senior Fellow, Rachel Hawley from the University of Lincoln will lead this workshop in collaboration with Kate Cuthbert, Higher Education Academy.
This workshop will provide an overview of existing approaches to public partnership in higher education, specifically; service user engagement in teaching and learning. It will open discussion around the value of such partnerships and raise the questions about the possibilities of HEA recognition for service user contributions to higher education. Throughout the workshop there will be opportunities for you to reflect on your experiences of partnership working (as an academic or non-academic) and the value of this through story telling activities. You will be introduced to examples of the Professional Standards Framework applied to existing service user stories of engagement as a basis for exploration. We will ask the question of how this offers a potential for a unifying approach to recognition that reaches beyond academics to include service user contributions to Higher Education. The event will close with a wider conversation about possible next steps for making the UK Professional Standards Framework more widely accessible to individuals, building connectivity; academics, patient and public partners and student partners - working together.

The workshop will be led by Rachel Hawley, Rachel is Project Manager for the HEI Challenge for Patient Quality Supported Quality Improvement and Education in Healthcare, based at the University of Lincoln. The ultimate goal of the HEI Challenge is to implement a cross-university collaboration to share, develop, showcase and spread work across East Midlands and surrounding universities around the unifying topic of healthcare quality improvement.
Rachel, SF HEA, has over 25 years’ experience of working with a wide range of public sector organisations at local, regional and national and European levels where patient, public and learner engagement have extensively underpinned her experience. Holding a Master’s degree in Coaching and Mentoring from Sheffield Business School she is currently working towards her Doctorate in Professional Studies on leadership for public engagement. As researcher, coach, lecturer and author with teaching experience in the fields of healthcare leadership and management Rachel is experienced in managing high profile national projects, skilled in providing expert consultancy, leading organisational and cultural change in complex organisations with a proven track record of working through ambiguity to develop and translate national policy into local goals and practice. “My personal and organisational approach is underpinned by collaborative style, working with people to simplify the complex and find innovative and practical solutions to change for improvement”.
